Only 6 years ago Villa were in the Championship and unhappy fans were throwing cabbages at manager Steve Bruce. Last night, under Unai Emery, they had their first home game in the Champions League, against Bayern, and their cult hero Jhon Durán scored a banger to win it.

We chat to Lars Sivertsen of The Guardian and Gregg Evans, who writes for The Athletic and talks about Aston Villa for the 1874 Podcast, about the club’s rebirth, the brilliant performance, the job Emery has done, Duran’s controlled madness, the young English talent they have backed, and the sky-high ambition the owners have for the club.

We also discuss Liverpool’s serene progress under Slot, Real Madrid’s shock loss to Les Dogues and whether the new CL format has worked so far.

Plus there’s Brendan Gleeson’s Villa origin story, Cannon’s cannon and Everton’s poetry banners.
