Episode 3104: States of Play: How Sportswashing Took Over Football
Miguel joins us to talk about his new book, States of Play: How Sportswashing Took Over Football, which is out now.
The book tells the story of how football has been reshaped beyond recognition by forces never anticipated by the people who opened it up for business in the 1980s and 90s.
Caught in a pincer movement between the political ambitions of autocratic states and the greed for returns of US finance capitalism, theoretically overseen by complacent or corrupt administrators, the game is increasingly seen by the people who own it as a propaganda tool or an asset to be milked or flipped – anything but a sport.
How have changes in the game reflected and perhaps anticipated bigger changes in the world? And what, if anything, is to be done?
My book, ‘States of Play’, is out now.
It is really a modern history of football, and how it has been transformed by three main forces: geopolitics, especially autocratic states; a very western capitalism; the game’s own greed and failures of authorityhttps://t.co/61DFuqGzKr
