Episode 2793: Luis Diaz Sr. Kidnapping Case, Crime And Football In Colombia, Limerick’s All-Star Season, Leinster Rugby’s Monoculture
On the 28th of October 2023 armed men on motorcycles abducted the parents of Liverpool striker Luis Díaz from a petrol station in the town of Barrancas, Colombia. Díaz has since been reunited with his parents, who were kidnapped by the guerrilla group the National Liberation Army (ELN), who first took up arms against the Colombian state in 1964.
We welcome the legendary Tim Vickery to the show to discuss why he was taken in the first place, why no ransom was sought, and how strong the links are between crime and football in Colombia, now that the drug cartels grip on the game has weakened.
Tim also wonders if a Diaz goal in tonight’s World Cup Qualifier between Colombia and Brazil, in Colombia, a few days after Diaz Sr’s emotional reunion with his son, is the kind of thing the football Gods could deliver.
