Episode 1113: Birthday Celebrations Continue – Michael Cheika On Managing Australia, Escaping War-Zones, And His Immigrant Story
Our birthday celebrations continue with the second of five very special in-depth interviews. We have chosen people from a variety of backgrounds, all with a uniquely independent spirit… and today we’re honoured to have Australian rugby union head coach Michael Cheika joining us.
A relative unknown when he came to Leinster in 2005, he completely revolutionised Leinster as an organisation, became the first club coach to win both the Heineken Cup and the Super Rugby Championship, won the Tri Nations with Australia on his first attempt, took them to a World Cup final, and was named World Rugby Coach of the Year.
He talks to us about growing up as the son of Lebanese immigrants in Australia, his travails getting out of his parents’ homeland last time he was there, creating a uniquely Australian culture for his team now, and why he doesn’t return to Ireland too often.
We also have a chance to look ahead to tomorrow’s Grand Slam decider and run the rule over England’s complete player overhaul. Do all the selection changes, ref changes, losses, and slurs mean England are guaranteed to lose? And has Eddie Jones changed his whole philosophy on how the game should be played?
