Episode 1632: Cork Football Is Back On The Charge, Says Paul Kerrigan; Rugby League’s History Of Political Rebellion In The Era Of Brexit, Ken’s Cat O’ Nine Tails
Cork football began this decade as All-Ireland champions, but it’s been rough pretty much ever since. Paul Kerrigan won his first and so far only All-Ireland title in 2010, and he might have been Cork’s best footballer in the years since, but positivity has been hard to come by.
As he prepares for the AIB Munster GAA club football final against Clonmel Commercials this Sunday, he’s feeling good about his club, and feeling good about Cork, for the first time in a while. In a wide-ranging chat, we cover plenty more besides, including redressing the club-county balance, and winter football.
We also speak to Tony Collins, emeritus professor of history at De Montfort University, about rugby league’s history of political rebellion, which should leave it impervious to recent Tory plans to target rugby league strongholds to win marginal seats in the upcoming UK General Election.

A few weeks ago, I wrote for @NewStatesman pointing out that the Tories are targeting rugby league towns. Lots of coverage of @ukonward focus on that strategy last week. But much less on how class, deindustrialisation, austerity shape rugby league today. https://t.co/PmOegSs3GF

Plus there’s Tory canvas bungling, cat o’ nine tails, medieval torture and bottleless gets.

Every day is a great day to be @knbrmurph but today is particularly lovely – he’s talking to us from Hawaii, as Lamar Jackson lights up the NFL, Kaepernick and the NFL go to war again, and a Steeler gets whacked across the head with his own helmethttps://t.co/T5XZuhFa5x pic.twitter.com/Ak4ZwF0X3M
